Is Meta AI encrypted?

No. Meta can read your regular chats with Meta AI and uses them to train its AI and tailor ads. Meta says it can't access Incognito chats, which run in Private Processing on its servers and are still rolling out.

Use an Incognito chat for private questions

  1. Open the Meta AI app and tap Menu at the top left.
  2. Tap Incognito chat at the top.
  3. Tap Ask Meta AI privately and type your question.
  4. On WhatsApp, open your chat with Meta AI, tap the Incognito chat icon (a dotted chat bubble), then tap Continue if asked.

Meta says it can't access these chats, and by default they disappear when you leave. They're still processed on Meta's servers, inside protected hardware, so they aren't sealed the way your personal WhatsApp chats are. Your regular Meta AI chats don't change: Meta can still read and use them. The feature is still rolling out, so you may not see it yet.

Can Meta read my chats with Meta AI on WhatsApp?

Yes, for regular chats. WhatsApp says that when you chat with Meta AI, directly or in a group, Meta receives what you or others send it1. Meta's terms say it may review those chats, by machine or by a person2. Meta says it can't access Incognito chats, which run in Private Processing6.

Your personal chats with friends and family stay end-to-end encrypted. Meta AI doesn't see them unless someone in the chat shares messages with it1, 3.

What does Meta's Private Processing cover?

Private Processing runs some optional Meta AI features, such as WhatsApp message summaries, writing help and Incognito chats, on secure hardware in Meta's data centers that Meta says it can't access7, 9. Requests are encrypted between your phone and that hardware, and nothing is kept once a request is done7, 8.

Your messages are still processed on Meta's servers, inside that protected hardware, so this isn't the same as end-to-end encryption, where only the people in the chat hold the keys. It doesn't cover regular chats with Meta AI. WhatsApp says it works only in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish for now, and Meta AI itself is offered only in some countries7.

Does Meta use my AI chats for ads and training?

Yes, for regular chats. Meta lists your interactions with its AI features among the sources it trains on3. Since 16 December 2025, in most regions, Meta also uses your text and voice chats with its AI to tailor the posts and ads you see4.

Meta says it doesn't use chats about topics like religion, health or sexual orientation to show you ads4. Meta AI chats on WhatsApp shape your other Meta apps only if you've added WhatsApp to Accounts Center4. Meta says it can't read chats that use Private Processing2.

Are Meta AI Incognito chats really private?

Meta says only you can see them, and neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access them6. By default the chat disappears when you leave, though you can choose to keep its history on your phone6, 10.

The other end of the chat is protected hardware in Meta's data centers, not your own device, so it isn't sealed the way your personal messages are. Meta publishes how it works and lets you download a report of what was processed7, 8. To answer some questions, Meta AI may send a web search based on your prompt to outside search engines, without linking it to your account, and you can turn web search off6, 7. Incognito chats launched in May 2026 and are still rolling out5, 10.
