Is Discord encrypted?
Partly. Since March 2026, only you and the people on the call can hear Discord voice and video calls. Discord can read your text messages, in DMs, group DMs and servers alike.

Are Discord DMs end-to-end encrypted?
No. Discord's privacy policy says messages are encrypted on the way and on its servers4, but that isn't end-to-end, so Discord can still read them. In May 2026 it said it has no current plans to bring end-to-end encryption to text messages, because many of its features were built on text not being sealed1.
Discord's privacy policy says it stores the messages you send, and scans attachments and other content for illegal or harmful activity4.
Are Discord calls end-to-end encrypted?
Yes, since early March 2026. Every voice and video call in DMs, group DMs, voice channels and Go Live streams is sealed by default, with nothing to turn on1. Discord's protocol, called DAVE, is open source and was audited by the security firm Trail of Bits1.
Stage channels, which are built for broadcasting to big audiences, are the one exception1, 2. Discord says it is removing the old code that let calls fall back to unsealed connections1.
Can Discord see who I call?
Yes. DAVE seals what you say and show, not the fact that a call happened: Discord can still see who joined, when and for how long3. Discord's privacy policy says it generally doesn't store the contents of calls, and that you can check in the app that a call is encrypted4.
How Discord compares
Sorted by how many parts are sealed by default, then by how many can be. Ties go A to Z.
